Not every person likes dogs. This is a fact often overlooked.
I don't think it's overlooked.

Lots of people don't like dogs, cats, motorbikes, cyclists on paths etc etc. But we are a community of people who get on with each other by accepting that we don't all have the same likes/dislikes.

I wouldn't take my dog into a proper restaurant. In fact I always assumed there was a law against it.

But a good ol english pub, I don't see what the problem is. My dog, lying under my table, is likely cleaner than the drunk lying under the other table hugging the spitoon.
Spittoons, I thought they went out with the Bubonic plaque=))

Yes, but when a dog bounds up and starts jumping up someone or like what Ken had happen, there are times and places for dogs and inside pubs probably isn't one. Some will share this view, some won't but consideration for others should also be part of being a community. Incidentally, my family and I have always had dogs and grew up with them. Never did we take any one of them into or to a pub out of consideration for others.

It was also not allowed until fairly recently. The trend for 'dog friendly' public eateries and hotels is recent.
Only guide dogs were allowed in public premises.

I think it's, again, the modern trend for people to treat their dogs like children and have to go everywhere with them. They are not children and should not frequent restaurants, hotels and pubs IMHO.
