Do any channels actually still broadcast in MW?

I know there's lots of classic style radios out there. DAB, mp3, usb etc. I can google for them myself.

What I'm looking for is personal 1st hand experience/recommendations. ie what are others putting in their rebodies.

Don't think so, no.
Buying a 'period' radio without FM will be for show only. And FM will probably be defunkt soon, as everything is going to DAB.

I bought a cheap JVC radio with USB reader and hid it in the glovebox. I had to get a 'short chassis' one as couldn't get a full size (CD player size)

to fit in the space.

I've re-used the front footwell speakers, as they have the crossovers and all the gubbins in them, then replaced my rears with a cheap set of Pioneers, rear mounted in my GRP rear bulkhead, so I didn't need speaker grilles. These are rubber mounted to stop any vibration into the GRP. They work well.
TBH I just listen to the engine/ K&N slurp/ exhaust, so music is not top of my priority list, but it's nice to have the option.

Thanks @Pond I saw your picture in your build thread.

What I'm looking for is one that works as an FM radio but maybe dab and maybe even BlueTooth and a USB port. But still looks kinda classical.

There are dirt cheap things on ebay but also becker europa like things for many 100's of quids.

So I was hoping that some poor sap, er, I mean, some enthusiast had already tried a few and could tell me about it.

I can get Radio 5 on MW and Radio 4 on LW on the std Z3 unit. Not sure how long they will continue to broadcast though. My listening preferences shows why I keep away from the stereo upgrade threads.

More usefully, I also use a cassette BT adaptor to listen to foreign things like NPR through a radio app. The point being, you can use any kind of BT adaptor (e.g. FM, cassette, aux in, or hardwired) and listen to whatever you like with an old/unsophisticated, sorry - ‘classic style’ head unit.

Hello,
I can suggest this shop
my brother bought one for his 1967 Mercedes and is extremely satisfied with functions and quality.
If your budget is at this limit.

I am sure I have seen people selling old radios on eBay, where they use old casings and re-wire the internals with modern stuff.
Probably not cheap though.

Thanks everyone.

I don't mean to sound ungraeful. But I have searched and I've seen them all. Really, I've seen every website and ebay seller out there.

What I was asking is

Has anyone installed a classic style radio into their rebody project? If so, what did you do? Photos?
So anyone with first hand experience whilo can tell me what they used and would they recommend it.

This is what I'm looking for

This one is by a company named 'Retrosound'.

But their advert is a little misleading. It really looks like this

retrosound-rsd-europa-1dab-1-din-autoradio-masori-kaufen-8.jpeg

So how is that old style acheived. Well, they sell, what they call, screen protector. Basically an overlay foil.

You stick it on the LCD and it looks vintage like the top picture. But only when the radio is switched off.

Switch.the radio on and it looks like this

Not what I'm looking for in a radio costing the thick end of 400 quid.

Looking at the Retrosound website i couldn't find any picture of the digital display behind a vintage overlay as that last picture. I found that one from a review on YT.

But I could be wrong. Maybe it doesn't look that bad.
Or maybe there's ways to use it with the display text brightness dialed down.

So I was hoping some body had already been there and could advise - otherwise it looks like I'll be taking one for the team and coming back to tell you guys all about it.

Compared to what you posted above there are things like this out there that may be a better design the led display under the overlay will always annoy you because i know it would annoy me .
But again depends on what features you are looking for what you would need.
Sorry i know this doesn't really help you much.
Stephen.

The retrosound will always have digital illumination, it is designed this way to support mp3 and bluetooth information. How else can you be able to browse songs and folders.

That looks terrible.

What about using a modern stereo and hiding it behind a 'flap' in the dash? It would be a lot cheaper (I have an Alpine with USB that you could have for free as it didn't fit my car)
I know you can get fake (or real) mono speakers which sit in the dash with retro grilles. That would give you the 'retro' look to some degree.

Did you use these? Which one did you get. Are you happy with it
Sorry I have not.

Can you break down what specifics you are looking for?
-Something that fits the look of the dash
-bluetooth?
-am/fm?
-handsfree calling?
-Navigation?

I suspect you'd be happy with just Bluetooth and a nice looking unit.

Another option:

Someone suggested a hidden stereo. This could work and I will add a similar idea. You could put in an actual classic radio, then buy a Bluetooth module, hide it under the dash and wire the audio out the head unit as the radio input. Something like that. You won't have an/fm controls on the stereo, but a lot of phones come with fm tuners anyway.

Just some ideas to ponder. Good luck!

I was hoping that a few people had already fitted old style (or even just old) radios and they could say what they did and why they did it. I was just interested to know what others have actually done.
