Z3 key

As I was about to leave a Christmas gathering at my inmates...I mean in-laws, though it's almost the same thing...I was getting something out of the trunk ( boot?) and turned the key to unlock, when it looked like the key broke. Looking closer, the key part had come out of the black plastic piece that attaches to the key chain. After some fiddling around I managed to get it back in well enough to start yhe car and get home
Yesterday, in better light and working place, I managed to get it back as it was originally. It's the only key I have, unfortunately, so I want to get a spare made. Can I get one made at a locksmith shop.or do I need to get one from a dealer. It's a 1997 model ,it doesn't appear to have a chip. Am I correct in thinking I just need a blank?

Uk wise, if there's no chip, any key maker would knock one up in 5 minutes.

Unfortunately it does have a chip all z3 keys do doesn't matter what design.

You will probably end up finding only a professional locksmith or the dealership will be able to supply you a key so be prepared to pay a couple of hundred quid.

Having a look a my silver zeds keys it has the full set i reckon your key you have there already is a copy as the center circle has no bmw badge embossed into it.
If your zed has the full set ( with alarm also fitted)
You get
2 x alarm remotes
2 x alarm key to deactivate
1 x torch key
1 x non torch key
1 x grey valet key ( wont open boot , storage and glovebox)
1 x plastic emergency key.

All are chipped ( using bmw's rolling code system) and will start the car also all bmw logo embossed that's why i think yours may be copy.
